Gather the facts first
Read the advert and separate essential requirements from preferences. Identify experience that shows you can do the work. A course, project or volunteer role may provide useful evidence even when it was not a paid job.
Collect roles, dates, education, tools and results you can explain. Note gaps as well. Do not claim a skill simply because the advert mentions it.
- Check your contact details.
- Select two or three relevant experiences.
- Describe the work you did and its outcome.
- Use skill levels you can support in an interview.
Replace vague claims with evidence
This fictional example shows how to describe experience. Replace it with your own facts.
Example: before and after
- Before
- I am motivated and good at Excel.
- After
- Compiled weekly sales data in Excel and checked discrepancies before sending the report to the team.
The revised version identifies a task, a tool and a context. Add numbers only when you can substantiate them.
Make the document easy to read
An applicant tracking system helps employers manage applications. Systems vary; no universal score or wording guarantees an interview.
Use clear sections for experience, education and skills. Follow the requested file format. Check that exported text can be selected and copied in a sensible order. Use the role’s terminology where it accurately describes your experience, without repeating keywords artificially.
